The Voice & the Ancient Science of Sound
How Sound Shapes Us
Sing · Breathe · Listen

Why does certain music calm us, focus us or move us? Thousands of years ago, Indian scholars set out to answer exactly that. Their work became one of the most detailed studies of sound in human history. They mapped where every sound is formed in the mouth and throat, how breath shapes the voice, and how vibration affects body and mind. It is the reason Sanskrit is built the way it is.

In this 2.5 to 3 hour workshop, Grammy-nominated vocalist Radhika Vekaria makes these ideas practical and accessible. Combining clear explanation with hands-on practice, she guides you through how the ancient traditions understood sound, and how you can use your own breath and voice today.

What we'll explore:

  • The science behind the sound: how ancient Indian systems studied vibration, voice and the body, and why their insights still matter

  • Why Sanskrit resonates: how the language is organized by where sounds are made, and what you feel when you sing it

  • Breath and voice: simple techniques to steady the nervous system, improve focus and use your voice with more ease

  • Deep listening: training the ear to notice pitch, tone and the drone of the tanpura

  • Singing together: short, easy melodies learned as a group.

You'll leave with a new understanding of sound, plus a few simple practices you can use in daily life.

Who it's for: Anyone curious about music, language, the voice or the mind. No musical experience needed, and nobody will be asked to sing alone.

What to bring: Water, a notebook, and comfortable clothing.
