This spring, we returned to Oaxaca for our annual pottery buying trip, traveling from village to village in search of pieces that honor tradition while expanding the possibilities of clay.

This year's trip revealed an extraordinary range of innovation, artistry, and imagination flourishing in workshops across Oaxaca today.

The result is an incredibly dynamic collection that ranges from the deeply traditional to the wonderfully unexpected, featuring beloved makers and villages we return to year after year.

The day will begin with a talk by Eric, who will introduce the artisans, share stories from the journey, and offer a glimpse into how this year's collection came together.

A Conversation with Rachna Sachasinh of Tikkiwallah

We are delighted to welcome Rachna Sachasinh of Tikkiwallah to Living Threads.

We have worked with Rachna since 2022. She and Eric first met when she interviewed him for a National Geographic article on the pottery traditions of Coyotepec, Oaxaca. Eric later introduced Rachna to Teresa, and the two quickly became friends. Since then, they have enjoyed working together and share a deep appreciation for traditional craft, cultural resilience, and the stories behind handmade textiles.

Rachna's work focuses on the seed-to-cloth movement and on supporting artisan communities in Laos and Thailand. Through long-standing relationships with artisans, she helps sustain traditional textile knowledge while creating pathways for these practices to thrive into the future.

During this special morning, Eric and Rachna will sit down for a conversation exploring hemp and its significance within Hmong culture.

For the Hmong people, hemp is far more than a fiber - it is deeply woven into cultural identity, tradition, and spiritual life. From farm to loom, the process of transforming hemp from plant to cloth is long and labor-intensive. Yet Hmong communities across Southeast Asia have sustained this practice for thousands of years, creating textiles that are both beautiful and enduring.

YESAET is Style x Positive impact. 

I’m Mimi Girma, founder of YESAET — pronounced 'YE-SATE' - a contemporary womenswear brand based in DUMBO, Brooklyn, built at the intersection of my Pan African artisanal heritage, sustainable practices and New York luxury craftsmanship.

YESAET stems from, and is nurtured through, my roots in Africa' where I grew up surrounded with bountiful intricate textiles, bold colors, patterns and prints. I was born in Ethiopia, raised in the Cote d'Ivoire and the UK. My origins and exposure to textile and craftsmanship in Africa ignited my passion for textile innovation and fashion design. Textiles have always fascinated and inspired me - they are the starting point for a collection.

The name YESAET is Amharic. It means a woman’s essence, a woman's work. That’s not incidental — it’s the whole philosophy.

 Every piece we make is connected to women: the artisans in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Addis Ababa who spin the yarn and weave and the cloth, the women leading the studios in New York, and construct the garments, as well as the women who ultimately wear them.

I came to the point of building YESAET after 25 years in fashion — Armani, Vivienne Tam — and what I kept returning to was a question the industry rarely asks honestly: what does it actually cost to make something beautiful, and who bears that cost? How can I keep creating and building my own business but make a positive impact ? I want to reconnect with my heritage, work with the cloths I love so much.

YESAET is my answer to those questions. We work with women-led artisan cooperatives. We produce in small batches. We botanical dye using plants and local farm donations. 

We build for longevity, not trend cycles.

Out tagline is ‘Style x Positive Impact’ and the multiplication is intentional. Neither one works without the other. 

I launched YESAET in February 2020- a couple weeks before the world stopped. And what that moment taught me is that slowness isn’t a liability. It’s the whole point.

We believe the past informs the present and the future hinges on the decisions we make today. We believe in timeless design, exquisite craftsmanship in textile and construction whilst reducing waste and striving for positive impact.

I fulfilled a lifelong dream in the fall of 2019 and returned to my roots in Ethiopia to not only connect with my heritage, but also embrace and learn more about the art of weaving integral to my culture, with the goal to source for YESAET.

Every day was an adventure, a sensual immersion in beauty, craft, human and cultural connection. But the culmination of my trip was completely unexpected: an invitation to visit an artisan studio and member of the World Fair trade organization, to learn how to weave. 

That day, while I passed the shuttle back and forth slowly across the loom, the quick, musical rhythm of cloth woven by the artisans around me filled the space. The energy and pride of the weavers was palpable as they guided, shared, smiled, and wove.

It was an emotional, inspiring moment – a dream come true.

My lifelong love of textiles, born in my African childhood and cultivated in my career as a New York designer was brought back full circle that morning. 

I often draw on the energy and inspiration that filled me that day at the weaving studio, and I’m reminded that our dreams are at our fingertips. 

The beauty of African craft partnered with small local production ateliers in NY is something I am proud to showcase through YESAET.

You’re invited into a slow Valentine’s morning - one shaped by hands, shared food, and gentle attention - at Living Threads Bodegón, our new gathering space quietly tucked behind the studio and held by warm earth walls.

We begin with ceremonial cacao, prepared with care by Maya Love of Necuhtli Cacao, opening the senses and inviting us into presence. From there, Rachel Dixon of Green Tractor Farm will guide us in weaving wreaths from organic dried flowers she has grown and gathered, sharing her knowledge and quiet reverence for the materials along the way.

As we craft, a simple, nourishing farm-to-table meal will be prepared and shared family-style by Cora Kilgo, local cook and gluten-free baker devoted to fresh, wholesome, and organic ingredients - food meant to ground us, warm us, and make us feel alive.

This morning is an offering: time to slow, to soften, to make with our hands and be with one another. A space for conversation and silence alike. A reminder that love lives in the doing—in care, in craft, in nourishment, in gathering.

You’ll leave with wreaths to mark the season, valentines shaped by your own hands, and the quiet joy of a morning spent in community.

Marcella Echavarria flows back to us again this week like the Pearl River, like earthy silk in the wind. She brings with her the mudsilk of Noir, her tribute to 2,500 years of union among elemental forces: river mud, wild silkworms and patient hands. 

Marcella has created a special collection for Living Threads this year.

As the founder of kotó, Samantha personally oversees every step of her process—from hand-preparing dye baths using indigo, cochineal, and wild marigold, to stitching intricate shibori patterns on linen, cotton, and silk, and finally sewing each piece into stunning garments. Her commitment to craft, sustainability, and heritage results in clothing that feels both timeless and deeply connected to place.

As we approach the Spring Equinox, we welcome the light.
